I'm torn about the song. On the one hand, I like both the original version as well as the Cash cover. On the other hand, it strikes me as theologically problematic.
The problem we have (as exemplified by progressive christians) is that we live in a world where everyone has their "personal Jesus" who's basically a therapist instead of the actual Jesus of Nazareth who (while personal) is not just about validating people's sins.
