This is an early take and it could change.
So, it’s sounding like the D’s were involved in writing this bipartisan (according to Chuck Schumer) bill, but defeated it on a party line vote. They clearly don’t understand two things. 1. The majority of corporations aren’t huge, 2). These corporations employ lots of people. If these corporations aren’t around, all those people are unemployed.
I’d like to see a list of how much money the DFL senators take in contributions from these corporations.
No, thinking that the federal government should have a role in mitigating some of the fallout from actions the federal government have taken in an extraordinary situation is not socialism.
Because what’s needed right now is prompt strong action to help the PO, the abortion industry, and revamp voter regulation rules.
Just some of the demands from Pelosi. These are all things that will directly impact that current medical and economic situation. What's the saying about not letting a god crisis go to waste? Clearly the DFL isn't going to let this good crisis go to waste when they can try to achieve things that they can't achieve otherwise.
Here’s a list of their demands:
- Corporate pay statistics by race and race statistics for all corporate boards at companies receiving assistance.
- Bailing out all current debt of postal service
- Required early voting
- Required same day voter registration
- 10k bailout for student loans
- For companies accepting assistance, 1/3 of board members must be chosen by workers
- Provisions on official time for union collective bargaining
- Full offset of airline emissions by 2025
- Greenhouse gas statistics for individual flights
- Retirement plans for community newspaper employees
- $15 minimum wage at companies receiving assistance
- Permanent paid leave at companies receiving assistance

I think their "bailouts" and money to those out of work should be loans.
I’m not sure I’d say only loans, but I’m not sure about the whole thing. Right now I’m seeing this somewhat like any situation where the government takes something from someone and has to compensate them fairly for what’s been taken. When it comes to large companies, I agree that loans are the better option. When it comes to the self employed/small business people I think loans might be less appropriate. It seems like a complicated enough situation that a simple, one size fits all, solution probably isn’t the answer. Whatever the final decision is, playing politics and adding unrelated extras to it doesn’t seem helpful.
My point here is that the DFL in this election cycle has chosen to say “screw you” to more and more constituencies. First it was 21,000,000 pro life democrats, labor unions (as opposed to public employee unions), now it’s any small business/self employed folks who might have voted for their candidate. At some point, telling constituencies that have historically voted DFL to “screw off”, seems like a bad plan.
“We have to take care of the cure that will make the problem worse no matter what,” said Biden.
Profound wisdom from the DFL presumptive nominee.
“James Clyburn (D., S.C.) told caucus members last week that the bill was “a tremendous opportunity to restructure things to fit our vision.”
Doesn’t really sound like they actually care about either the economy or those with the virus.
They are Demokrats. What else can you expect?
I saw the comments from the TX Lt Governor about grandparents sacrificing. I get that it sounds bad, and maybe it is, but is it possible that he meant sacrificing by staying quarantined?
At some point I guess it’s not unreasonable to expect some degree of patriotism .
It’s so damn annoying when you see nakedly partisan takes on things like this.
As if the $25,000,000 for the Kennedy center has anything to do with the Wuhan virus and all the other extraneous crap that got loaded in this bill.
Y’know how sometimes people want to exclude others from a discussion for arbitrary reasons? The “You can’t talk about abortion if you’re a dude folx?
Well, about this? If you’ve never owned a small business or been self employed, don’t whine to me that you might not get a bonus on top of the unemployment you already are going to get
If you’re not trying to figure out if you can make it through the next two months without having to tap your retirement investments, I really don’t care what you want to spew.
