Likewise, it's refreshing to see a couple of democrat legislators willing to buck their party in search of the Truth.

https://x.com/joelwberry/status/1836389133972894086?s=51&t=cLq01Oy84YkmYPZ-URIMYw

Harris has been using the story of a GA woman who died from poor medical care after she had a chemically induced abortion to push the narrative that the repeal of Roe caused this.   Instead of pointing out that this is what happens when abortionists fail to give their patients proper follow up care.

Somehow all of these comments just slipped people's minds as they blame Trump for the multiple assassination attempts recently.   It doesn't seem like it was all that long ago when "words were violence".

"I have always maintained that speech is speech and is not violence, and that the moral deficit lies not with the purveyor of the idea but with the person who acted on it. To paraphrase Viktor Frankl, civilization is only possible because of our capacity to pause between stimulus and response and, in that pause, to choose the one response toward which we wish to throw our weight. But reality is a lot more complicated than that. Ideas do compel people to act, though almost never in a vacuum. What one believes is only one part of a very complex milieu of causes that can move someone to materialize mere thoughts in the world of atoms. What I find really hard to believe though, is that the people who constantly told us over the last 8 years that: - Anti-immigration rhetoric is violence against immigrants - criticizing Islam leads to violence against Muslims - criticizing gender ideology is genocide against trans - Trump saying “China virus” and “Kung Flu” (objectively funny) led to anti-Asian hate crimes all asserted with no proof by the way… suddenly now fail to see the connection between “democracy dies if Trump the Hitler gets elected” and not potential but ACTUAL violence? Violence that already took place? It’s almost as if such claims were just fake concerns deployed to shut down legitimate criticism. Can Trump make his own life easier? Yes, yes he can. If he himself paused a bit more and stopped immediately reacting to stimuli, he wouldn’t constantly be on the receiving end of so much vitriol. But are his assassination attempts his own fault? No. That so many in the legacy media can’t even stop themselves from victim-blaming says so much about where we are as a society. Trump is now 0-2. Whatever doesn’t kill him only makes him stronger. The average American will only see this as some GANSTA-level shit. Meanwhile, the media continues to beclown themselves."

Chen is a center-right political commentator who's never been particularly pro-Trump, but makes some good points.   The line about being able to pause between stimulus and response, is particularly telling.   The fact that the default position of the MSM is that we have no the motivation of a shooter, even when there is direct evidence, is disturbing.  Yet, how much of that is driven by the need to fill airtime with "breaking news" even when there is none?

 https://x.com/leadingreport/status/1835709204910235709?s=51&t=cLq01Oy84YkmYPZ-URIMYw

So we have actual evidence of Harris pledging to release all criminal illegal migrants from detention, and it's not particularly newsworthy for the MSM.

Preponderance

I tend to think that one way you can determine what is important to people is to pay attention to what they talk about the most.  I think that people talk most about what they value most.

So, when I watched the DNC and watch DFL campaign commercials, or watch the debates.  I pay attention to the tings they talk about most often strangely enough, I've found that the preponderance of DFL campaign communication mentions abortion.   I wonder why abortion, something that directly affects a small percentage of the US population is such a major focus of the DFL message.

Oh, as an afterthought, a Biden/Harris/Walz supporter attempted another assassination attempt on Trump yesterday, the MSM and the DFL mostly just yawn.   For some reason the Secret Service doesn't seem to take protecting Trump seriously enough after the first assassination attempt to do anything differently.

FWIW, if I were Trump I would engage visible private security at any and all future campaign events and if asked about it say something like, "I have the utmost respect and appreciation for the rank and file Secret Service agents who have risked their lives to protect me.   Unfortunately, their leadership up to and through the DOJ/Biden administration has chosen to make providing Secret Service protection to presidential candidates who are running against them a political issue.   Therefore, until I regain the office of president, I must augment my Secret Service details with other assets.   When elected, I will take all appropriate measures to ensure that the Secret Service is not used for political gain in the future."

Data v. Narrative

 https://winteryknight.com/2024/09/12/study-white-progressives-are-more-racist-against-minorities-than-white-conservatives-2/

WK brings some interesting data as always.

Good, Bad, Comparison, Grading on a Curve

In my Bible study this morning, we inevitably got around to the topic of sin.    It got me thinking about sin, good, bad, etc and how we see ourselves.   I think that where we have trouble is comparison, who we compare ourselves to, and who we look to for dealing with our sin.

It's said that "Comparison is the thief of joy." by some, unless it's comparing our sins.   Inevitably we compare our sins to others real and imagined sins and we grade on a curve.   We tell ourselves that we aren't anywhere near as bad as that other person, and that we've only committed a few minor sins.   We tell ourselves that sin is just "missing the mark", and convince ourselves that we always barely miss that "mark".   When we compare our sins to others, it makes us feel pretty good about ourselves, "God can't be upset with me because I'm an angel compared to...".   I know we've all done this, taken joy in our imagined superiority over others.  I know that some of us, kind of revel in that superiority, we're proud of how good we are.   Compared to others.

But what if our comparison was wrong?   What if we're not meant to compare our self to others, and grade ourselves on a curve?  What it there's a higher standard that we should be comparing ourselves to?

Likewise what if we stopped measuring how good we are by comparing ourselves to others?    Again, what if there was a different standard?    What if our motivations were more important than our actions?   What if doing good meant real, hard, significant, sacrifice?

What if our good, our bad, our sin, wasn't self graded and wasn't graded on a curve of our own making?  What if the test was pass/fail?

Finally, what if it wasn't up to us?  What if our performance, and success wasn't based on anything we do or can do?   What if, it's really not all focused on us at all?   What if we're not the center of everything?

I don't have a clip for this one, but Harris went on about needing a 2 state solution for the Israel/Hamas/Gaza war.    You'd think that she'd know that the Arabs/Hamas/PLO/Hezbollah/Gazans have been against a 2 state solution since 1948.   They've been offered a 2 state solution multiple times and refused.  Why in the name of all that is Holy does she think that she is going to be able to achieve what no one else has, and what the Arab side doesn't want.    FYI, I'm guessing that her sex will make dealing with Arab leaders difficult, especially with the more hard line ones.

MN and 7 other states/DC currently have laws that allow abortion up to the moment of birth, and we're seeing laws requiring lifesaving care for infants born alive after attempted abortions weakened or eliminated.    Honestly, the default position of a Dr with a living, breathing, born infant (no matter if they f'ed up the abortion or not) should be to save the child.   Anything less seems like a return to the Roman empire.

Debate

Trump will be asked about gun control at the debate. I think he should answer with something like this “A few weeks ago, I was inches away from being killed. A bullet grazed my ear. A life changing experience. I thank God for sparing my life. A young man with a gun tried to kill me - I know more than most the threat guns pose. We have a right to bear arms in this country, a right to self-defense, but with that right comes a lot of responsibility. We have a responsibility to enforce the laws that we have that would keep guns out of the hands of the wrong people. We also have the responsibility to get serious about the other factors driving disturbed young people to murder. Gun ownership hasn’t increased in the past 50 years. So what’s changed? Our values, our technology, our entertainment, family cohesion, even our medical industry has changed to the detriment of the mental health of kids. Disarming law abiding people isn’t a real solution, and that’s the only thing Kamala Harris has proposed. If we really want to put an end to school shootings, we need to look at all factors. As president, I’m willing to do that. Whatever it takes to protect children while honoring the right of good citizens to defend themselves as they see fit”

Allie Beth Stuckey

Personally, I think she's exactly right. Trump has an excellent opportunity tonight, because if he does well there will never be another, to set himself up to beat Harris. As long as he gives answers like this, calls her out on her interruptions, and doesn't get dragged down, he should be fine.

FWIW, polling data is starting to show trends indicating that Trump could win the popular vote as well as the electoral college.

When Kamala inevitably drops her pre-prepared “I’m speaking” line, Trump should say: “There it is, she’s been practicing that for months. Did you media folks get that? That was for you. Now go spread it around on social media while I discuss how to fix the problems she caused.”

"Democracy"

"Hard Reality:  For our democracy to survive two things need to happen.     Donald Trump needs to be Convicted for Jan 6th and there can be no Third Party Candidate."

Rob Reiner

Convicting the major opposition candidate and preventing third party candidates from running in a federal, general, election, seems like the antithesis of "democracy".   In all honesty it sounds much more like the sort of thing we'd hear from a 3rd world socialist dictator.   When democrats say "save democracy", this is what they mean.  One party rule.  It's like advocating lying to protect Truth, or having sex to protect virginity.   This is what people like Dan support.

Given how the left treats voters who say they'll vote for Trump by assuming that they 100% agree with every position attributed to Trump (accurate or not), I think it's safe to say that any Harris voters are CHOOSING to vote to support the things Harris says she wants to do.

I can only hope that Trump can use some of this in the debate.

Cats

A while back I wrote about Springfield OH.   It's a town of @60k residents who was gifted 20k Haitians immigrants by the Biden/Harris administration.   Over the last few days we're seeing reports that the Haitians are killing and eating Canada Geese (which are protected from harm by federal law) as well as pet cats.   I know that in Haiti, cats are eaten so this doesn't surprise me.   We've also just had a report of a child killed by a Haitian immigrant.

One of the things about Haitian culture is that they tend to not look at the future consequences of their actions.   For example, much of the country has been deforested and the trees turned into charcoal.   Obviously this leads to the increased damage done by storms as the trees aren't there to stabilize the soil.   So it doesn't shock me that Haitians plopped into OH with no frame of reference live as they've always lived.

I'm also not shocked that the greens aren't saying a thing about the killing of a federally protected species, and that the DFL cat ladies are likewise silent over the demise of cats.

"“Well, since I work in the Ohio city that is presently all over the news, I suppose a few words are in order. (When I type in the city name, Facebook seems to be blocking it.) For those of you not following, two local Catholic charities have contracted with the federal government to relocate "refugees." (I use quotes, because the local Haitians themselves are telling folks they were recruited for work.) This is publicly disputed, but the evidence is overwhelming. Regardless, at present, 20k Haitians now live in an Ohio town of 60k residents. The results are predictable, and I can confirm the stories are true. Traffic accidents involving Haitian drivers has skyrocketed - property damage, hit and runs, and more. One kid was killed when a driver slammed into a school bus filled with kids. Petty crime is out of control. Stores are locking down merchandise due to rampant theft. Driving without a license is ubiquitous. The schools are chaotic. The local district has had to spend north of $300k on translators. I spoke with a teacher who said there is not nearly enough room in the existing buildings. The real estate market is also crazy. A friend of mine in real estate said that most of the Haitian families have banks cards from somewhere with $20k ear-marked for buying homes. The market was already tight, but now the prices are soaring. Don't get me started on the hospitals. And, yes, the stories about Haitians killing and eating neighborhood cats and ducks from local parks is true. I know situations like this are complicated politically and culturally, but what I get most frustrated about is when people call this kind of policy compassionate. There is not an ounce of compassion in this situation for either the immigrants nor the citizens. The citizens are being ignored, and the immigrants are being manipulated by deep pockets somewhere. It benefits the politically connected elites and business class, and nobody else.”

Revisiting the Past

I was re watching the Super Bowl, on the eve of the drive for the 3 peat, and realized how many chances SF had to win the game in regulation.   Starting in the 3Q, the missed PAT was the biggest.   Had that been made it's a 4 point lead, and KC would have had to significantly change to a riskier play calling approach, and wouldn't have been able to trade FG's to stay in the game.

It's interesting to see what some perspective and time does.

We've got real football coming soon.   A few thoughts.

The NFL schedulers were very kind to the Jets and the Bears.   Front loading their schedules to increase their chances of early success is great for the Rogers comeback and the  Williams rookie year.

The NFC North should be very competitive with 3 teams that should be good, and Min which might be better than we think.

KC has a tough schedule early, but has the opportunity to get tie breakers on Bal, and Cin in Sept.

Buffalo, and Baltimore should be down this year due to losses of talent and coaching.

Houston should be interesting to watch, no one seems concerned about any regression or about how Diggs will impact the offense if he doesn't get his touches.

The Chargers and Raiders should be below average, and the Broncos might be a surprise.

Ultimately the AFC is going to be interesting as many of the good teams should be worse, and the NFC should be better for the first time in a while.

No matter what, it'll be fun.

FYI, I like how the NFL front loads easier schedules for teams that have good story lines, they ultimately have to play the harder games, but to build up wins early helps.   Unlike the WNBA which screwed the Fever/Clark by scheduling them against the best teams from last year early.  Like it or not, good story lines are good for the leagues.

Hope

"I'm an absolutist on the subject of abortion."

While this statement may be True, it's also True that this particular "absolutist" is willing to compromise their absolutism in order to elect a particular presidential candidate.

For the record, I have no problem with compromising a principle you hold absolutely to support a "lesser of two evils" presidential candidate.   It literally happens in virtually every election.

What I'd hope for is honesty about the compromise being chosen.   What I'd hope for is acknowledgement that the current, expressed, position of said candidate on abortion is less absolute than it has appeared to be in the past.   What I'd hope for is the acknowledgement that said candidate is less absolute on abortion that they were in previous campaigns.  What I'd hope for is the demonstration of grace that acknowledges that other absolutists are not as willing to compromise on their absolute principles, and that doing so is an equally principled position to take.

I doubt, my hopes will be realized, but I still hope.

More data to be ignored and sacrificed on the altar of a Narrative.

Disgrace

Hamas executed 6 hostages last week in order to prevent them from being freed by Israel.    Yet Biden raises himself from his slumber to criticize Israel, who's agreed to every cease fire proposal proposed since last spring.  Harris threatens Israel with various negative consequences if they don't do what they've already done?   Walz literally runs away after being asked a question about the executions at the state fair.   A freaking US citizen is held hostage by terrorists for almost a year, and executed and the Biden administration does NOTHING to get him back?    All the while, pro Hamas protesters support terrorism, kidnapping, rape, and murder in the streets of the US.     This is more blood on the hands of the Biden/Harris administration.  What kind of federal government simply stands by and does nothing while US citizens are held hostage and executed by terrorists.
