 Trump will be asked about gun control at the debate. I think he should answer with something like this “A few weeks ago, I was inches away from being killed. A bullet grazed my ear. A life changing experience. I thank God for sparing my life. A young man with a gun tried to kill me - I know more than most the threat guns pose. We have a right to bear arms in this country, a right to self-defense, but with that right comes a lot of responsibility. We have a responsibility to enforce the laws that we have that would keep guns out of the hands of the wrong people. We also have the responsibility to get serious about the other factors driving disturbed young people to murder. Gun ownership hasn’t increased in the past 50 years. So what’s changed? Our values, our technology, our entertainment, family cohesion, even our medical industry has changed to the detriment of the mental health of kids. Disarming law abiding people isn’t a real solution, and that’s the only thing Kamala Harris has proposed. If we really want to put an end to school shootings, we need to look at all factors. As president, I’m willing to do that. Whatever it takes to protect children while honoring the right of good citizens to defend themselves as they see fit”

Personally, I think she's exactly right. Trump has an excellent opportunity tonight, because if he does well there will never be another, to set himself up to beat Harris. As long as he gives answers like this, calls her out on her interruptions, and doesn't get dragged down, he should be fine.

 

FWIW, polling data is starting to show trends indicating that Trump could win the popular vote as well as the electoral college.  

 

 When Kamala inevitably drops her pre-prepared “I’m speaking” line, Trump should say: “There it is, she’s been practicing that for months. Did you media folks get that? That was for you. Now go spread it around on social media while I discuss how to fix the problems she caused.”
