This is a really good question. "What makes an American?"
Unlike Europe, Much of Asia, and Africa, geography is not the answer. Unlike the 57 Muslim countries, adherence to a religion, is not the answer.
The answer seems to be somewhere in the neighborhood of "shared values".

It is a good question and while it might be true that we might have some shared values, we also have disparate values. I would say, at least in our better moments, we have shared beliefs in human rights and freedom and opposition to harm but otherwise freedom to let people make their own decisions and choices. Those specific shared values.

Sadly, over the last half century or more, American values have been perverted and distorted to mean that which are contrary to them. The progressive continues dragging the nation away from them.
