" Sin definitely wasn’t ever about rule-breaking! God is the creator of us, and since He created us, He gets to write the instruction manual for what is best for our functioning, just like the bloke who made the lawnmower can tell us that if we drive it into a river, it will cease to function. Sin is driving the lawnmower into the river, and being surprised when sin causes harm is being surprised when the lawnmower shorts out."

I'm not sure I believe that either of these totally captures the entirety of what Sin is or does. But I resonate with the notion of YHWH's Laws and rule being put there for our benefit and so that we know what He thinks is best for us.
