These maxims will sound “dangerously simple,” per some (pseudo-)intellectual types, but I believe these are the best ways of orienting oneself in life:

  1. Truth is discovered, not created; truth exists independently of our minds.

  2. We must find truth and align ourselves with it; we must not believe we can bend knowledge or reality to our will.

  3. There are truths about right and wrong.

  4. We must strive to find, and to follow, the truths about right and wrong.

I have found good evidence for any of all of above. I believe them to be factually, empirically correct. I have never found reliably good outcomes from ignoring the above. I have tended to experience better outcomes by following the above.
