I’m sure there is meaning here.

As you may or may not know, Disney and the Oprah took a fantasy book laden with Christian allegory (much like The Narnia series), replaced the Christian subtext with some sort of generic, inoffensive, vaguely eastern mystical spirituality and made a special effects laden movie out of it. I’m not sure what the budget was, but we can assume large, can’t we?

Yet somehow a low budget, less widely released film about the story behind a CCM song outgrosses the Oprah.

Time after time these low budget explicitly Christian films out perform expectations, and yet Hollywood still churns out schlock that either ignores or offends Christians.   Seriously, I can only imagine what Noah would have done if they had stayed closer to the story.   I personally can’t  believe that someone couldn’t update the Story of Esther (or not) and make a supremely compelling film. The Bible is full of great stories, that could lead to great films.

Really, isn’t that  what good filmmaking is all about?  Telling a good, compelling story in an engaging and skillful way?
