Horrible

George Floyd died last night in an encounter with a Minneapolis police officer.   Video shows the officer kneeling on the neck/back of his head and the victim died after him doing this for an extended period of time.

There appears to be no reason why Mr Floyd died during this encounter, and no apparent reason for the officer to have acted as he did.

This is absolutely a horrible tragedy and there is nothing in the video evidence that gives any justification for the actions of the officer.

The mayor has turned the investigation over to the BCA and the FBI, which is a totally appropriate action given the history of the MPLS police and city government for what has been labeled "institutional racism" in the city government and police department.   It is absolutely critical that the investigation be undertaken by entities not in the control of the city of Minneapolis to give the appearance of an independent and unbiased investigation.

It's being reported that the two primary officers involved have been fired.  I'm not saying that they shouldn't have been fired at some point, but it seems like this action (which isn't the standard response) could be problematic at their trial.   I'm 100% on board with investigating, charging, and trying these officers.  However, if their firing (as opposed to a suspension pending the outcome of the investigation) ends up causing problems at trial, the conspiracy theorists will be out in full force.

One last thing.  I realize that a lot of folx are going to be riled up, especially since we have partial video of the incident that is incredibly damning, although possibly incomplete.    What we don't have at this point (or what I haven't seen) is evidence of motive.  Given that reality, it seems reasonable to be angry at what actually happened without injecting unknown factors into it.

Not consistently pro choice

“If you are a church that is opening back up after Trump’s political ploy today, take some time before you preach your next sermon on being pro-life. Your actions in this are too loud for us to hear you on that.”

This was from a personal friend of mine, who posted it on his FB page.

1.  If you accept this logic then it seems you would need to stop calling yourself pro-choice.

2.  If you’re a pastor, and are posting this sort of political content on your public social media, where you identify as a pastor of a specific church, it seems like your tax exempt status should be in jeopardy.

Who?

Who elected Biden as the final arbiter of who is black or not?

How is Biden’s comment not racist?

Feeling entitled much Joe?

RIP

This week we lost Ravi Zacherias to cancer.    While I'm sure that his family will mourn his loss, we know that he is with Jesus.   He will be greatly missed.

A link to WK with a timely post.

Woman

"To protect women's rights, we must be able to say what a woman is.  If postmodernism is correct-that the body itself is a social construct- then it becomes impossible to argue for rights based on the sheer fact of being female.  We cannot legally protect a category of people if we cannot identify that category."

If y'all think

If y'all think that the denial of the virus and the resistance to social distancing is something that's just a conservative thing, think again.

This is so far beyond anything I've heard from any conservative,  I really don't have too much to say.

Is it possible?

Is it possible for a white person to harm a person of color (including but not limited to; killing, shooting, stabbing, beating, kicking, robbing, etc.) without doing so because of racism?

I've got nothing

Martin Tolchin, who spent 40 years at the NYT before founding The Hill and Politico, had this to say about Tara Reade's allegation against Joe Biden in a letter to the editor.

To the Editor:

I totally disagree with this editorial. I don't want an investigation. I want a coronation of Joe Biden.    Would he make a great president? Unlikely.  Would he make a good president? Good enough.  Would he be a better president than the present occupant? Absolutely.  I don't want justice, whatever that may be.  I want a win, the removal of Donald Trump from office, and Mr. Biden is our best choice.

Suppose an investigation reveals damaging information concerning his relationship with Tara Reade or something else, and Mr Biden loses the nomination to Senator Bernie Sanders or someone else with a minimal chance of defeating Mr. Trump.  Should we really risk that possibility?

This gentleman described as "Washington journalist Martin Tolchin" doesn't sound like the idealized version of the unbiased journalist, does he?

Is an effective treatment closer than we think

As someone who is becoming increasingly skeptical of much of what we hear regarding the current situation with the Wuhan virus.   I do know that I haven't seen either of these stories covered much either in the mainstream media, nor on social media.   It seems like this could be pretty good news if things prove out.  Of course, it's possible that some sort of treatment will be developed fairly quickly, but that the approval process will drag availability out longer.

As usual, when I see something at WK, I'll usually post the link instead of quoting.  That way the context is there and all of the supporting links are readily available.

Really?

“Best thing I read today:

The end of the stay at home orders doesn’t mean the #pandemic is over. It just means there is room for you in the ICU. 😩”

There has literally never been a shortage of ICU beds in the US.

Of course hospital staff are not allowed to work, hospitals have lost billions of dollars,
and people aren’t getting treatment because cancer diagnostic tests aren’t essential.

Myths

There's a myth out there, mostly spread by folks on social media who don't look much past headlines, that essentially goes after the "Covid truthers".   The impression being given is that it's a bunch of right wing nuts driving the bus.   I honestly don't know enough, and am unwilling to follow this trail far enough to see what or who these people are.   What I am going to do is quote extensively from someone quite far to the left, and allow him to spin out his own conspiracy theories for your amusement.

"I am telling you very clearly. The world you knew is gone forever and we are now being prepared through the social isolation, mask wearing, snitching, and blind obedience to authority and its media, to a new way of being, a new robotic way of being, a controlled way of being. This is not about a virus. This is about control. There is no end in sight. Don’t get lost in the fear porn of the virus from the media. None of it can be trusted.

I am not afraid of the virus. The virus is manufactured. COVID is a movie. Real people die. But we have no idea what is really killing them. We are only told. We are told by the same movie-makers who gave us 9/11. It isn’t the wickedness in high places that causes the despair in me. It isn’t the wickedness of the elites who have unleashed this psychological operation upon us that causes me to fear awakening. The despair is caused by the reactions of others who not only accept what they are told but actively silence those who are searching for what is real and true. The despair is for the collective delusion of my fellow humans. We are descending into slavery, in which every aspect of our lives will be controlled. We are seeing it unfold now. We are not becoming enslaved by force, but by our own acquiescence.
That said, it is still force. This is a psychological operation enacted by transnational agents and personalities upon all of us. This has been planned for many decades, perhaps generations. But we could resist it if there were enough people who could see this for what it is and simply say, “We are not going to cooperate.”
That may happen. There are people who battle tirelessly to communicate what they have seen and have discovered that is contrary to the media propaganda, and they will continue to do this as long as they are able to do so.
But now this movement is being forced underground. As I see it, it will likely remain there for decades if not centuries. "

" he global elite have been thinking about this and planning for it for a long time. COVID is the implementation of the plan. COVID is a controlled demolition of the global economy. It is a contraction that is engineered to benefit the elite. Those plebians who survive this ritual of transformation to the new reality either will be incorporated into it, accepting all the elements of global control and servitude, or they will rebel and die, or they will be ushered into prison camps, however large or small they need to be as we see now in Gaza. This is my despair. This is happening.
The same people, by the way, who control the concentration camp that is Gaza are the same people who engineered 9/11 and this COVID operation. They are all part of the same cabal, the same cult of transnational agents and personalities. Read David Icke’s book Trigger. Hadn’t heard about that book? Oh, yes, you haven’t heard of it because Icke was banned from Facebook and Youtube. He is not acceptable. Who he names is why he is banned. More than most, in my opinion, David Icke gets what is happening and who is responsible. He is one of the witnesses who has been telling us for three decades what has been happening and he has been exposing these psychopathic monsters who are running our world. He was one of the earliest voices to show that 9/11 was a scam."

Just to provide some balance.

Hysteria

I'm noticing a bit of hysteria about a small group of protesters who decided that protesting with weapons was the best way to make their point.

I'm going to start with the obvious, that this was a really bad idea.   That anyone thinks that carrying weapons as part of a protest is a good idea is beyond me.  While I might agree with the point they were trying to make, I simply can't agree that carrying weapons helped them make their point more effectively.  I'd argue that they actually detracted from any legitimate points they were trying to make by their actions

With that said, let's point out a couple of facts.

First and most important, the protest was peaceful, respectful, quiet, and no one was threatened.
Second, the same people with their panties twisted have a history of silence when it comes to ANTIFA, BLM, and other groups of armed leftist protesters who've shown a history of violence,  or directly threatened people (including police with violence  or death).   These folx didn't get this worried  about leftist protesters laying siege to a police station, including use of Molotov Cocktails, or dropping large chunks of concrete on the heads of police from overpasses.   Beyond that, these folx didn't get nearly this worked up over the various instances we've see on riots, including burning, and looting when they agreed with the perpetrators.

To be clear, this post isn't about the protesters, I am completely against the use of violence in protests, I'm against the threat of violence or harm as a part of a protest.  I disagree with carrying arms at these protests because it leads some to conclude that simply carrying a weapon is an implicit threat.  It leads people to overlook the reality that these armed protesters were peaceful, and caused no harm.  they damaged nothing and besieged nothing.  It clouds the issues.

My problem is the people who who get all bent out of shape by calm, peaceful  armed protesters who they disagree with, while not showing the same level of outrage for the violent, armed protesters who they agree with.

It's interesting that it's "privilege" to engage in a peaceful, nonviolent, protest while carrying not brandishing, slung, holstered, possibly not even loaded) firearms.  Yet it's not "privileged" to engage in violence, arson, looting, destruction, assault, all while armed.

It is obvious that this hand wringing, panty twisting, beta male whining isn't anything but more of the same double standards we expect from certain people.
