What if the experts don't agre with the narrative

A couple of months ago there was a bit of a stir when a leader of the Chicago teacher's union tweeted about how it was unsafe for teachers to go back into the classrooms, while she was on a beach in the Caribbean.   Some folks thought this was hypocritical, others just ignored it.

Most of the teachers I personally know, would like to get back to teaching in person.  They're sick of the hassles, and miss their students.  They're pretty confident that they can safely teach in their classrooms.   Yet, some teachers unions seem to be resistant to reopening schools.  Despite the sciencey folks saying that it's workable,  and the fact that it's actually being done successfully in some places.   One wonders why that is.   But I think the above article makes some good points, and raises some worthwhile questions.

On a related note.  I overheard a teacher friend saying that they were ending school year early because the state had "waived some requirements.  It makes me wonder why these things were "requirements" if they could be waived.  It also makes me wonder how many of those "requirements" actually benefit our kids and their education.

One thing that I sincerely hope comes out of the events related to COVID is a serious discussion about how we do education, and how we can do a better job in the future.
