Some things seem to be universally True. Although I'd add that some men would rather be damned than be on the "wrong side of history".
I guess it's an interesting look at what different people value more highly.

Some men would rather be damned than get on the right side of reason and morality and Justice and basic human decency. And so they're rightly damned.
I guess it then comes down to who gets to define the "right" side of those subjective categories.
Some boys pretend what they believe has some relationship to reason, morality, justice and/or basic human decency. Such boys like Dan like to adorn their pigs with lipstick.
