Little Bitty Fascism?

I just saw a report that the MPLS city council is considering revoking the liqueur licenses of two hotels that rented rooms to ICE agents.

I could be wrong, but this sounds a lot like what a fascist might do.  As does blocking public roads and restricting access to those public roads.

I hope that big lawsuits are on the horizon for this city council. I can't believe it's Constitutional.

Not knowing what the law is, it's hard to say. But I can't believe that a city council has the authority to enforce liqueur laws punitively simply because they don't like who rented rooms in a hotel. I don't want to reference Dan's list, but I can't believe that this kind of thing doesn't fit somewhere.

As the anon post came from one who is banned here, infanticide was necessary.

However, I do wish to clarify something that shouldn't be a shock to anyone who reads this.

I 100% support the right of private citizens and businesses to do business with whomever they choose and to limit their clientele based on whatever criteria they choose. I think that doing so is probably a bad business choice, but I respect the right of people to make and suffer the consequences of poor decisions.

Thus ends any further interaction with the troll.

Whether or not it turns out to be a bad business choice remains to be seen, doesn't it? Many may approve. Many may not. If a merchant sets policy, the merchant assumes responsibility for the effect it has on the success of the business. That's letting the market decide. Any city council who imposes on bars, restaurant, hotels or the like is out of bounds. They have no such authority.

Was this the same troll who asserted that portraying the Obamas as donkeys is somehow "racist"? I don't know why it would be. There are lots of jackasses in the jackass party as well as millions of jackasses who support that party!

That is exactly the point. Businesses should be free to make decisions (that are legal and comply with local health/safety regulations) to conduct business as they wish. Obviously the results of a bad business decision take time to play out. The point is, and has been, that it is the business owner's decision to make and that the business owner is responsible for the consequences of his choices. Good, bad, indifferent, who cares.

In this case, for the city council to punitively attack a business for a perfectly legal and morally neutral business decision is completely absurd. To do so without even the charade of finding a "health code violation" is even worse. Essentially, if the council was being internally consistent, they would immediately stop taking any money from the federal government and punish any citizens who did so.

It is highly likely.
