For years we've been fed the gospel of Self Determination. The bizarre notion that individuals can arbitrarily determine where they want to live, and that the nations they choose MUST blindly accept them. Under this dogma, there is no reason to prevent even the most vile criminal from simply plopping themselves down in a country of their choice, because Self Determination demands that anyone be allowed the human right to determine where they live. Hell, one could make the argument that this same Self Determination dogma is what underlies blue cities and states protecting squatters in private property.
Strangely enough, Mexicans don't seem to have completely bought the Self Determination gospel. They have no problem with millions of their countrymen determining that the US is a fine place to live, nor do they object to the millions/billions of dollars that get pumped into Mexico's economy. They do, however, strongly and violently object to roughly 10k US citizens who've decided that their ability to work remotely should allow them to legally do so in Mexico. They demand that these "digital nomads" speak Spanish, while fighting determinedly not to speak English in the US.
Can you imagine if US citizens engaged in such anti-immigrant tactics? The outcry from the ASPL and the MSM?
My problem is that I completely support their message, if not their actions. I have absolutely no problem with the fact that Mexico has immigration laws significantly more stringent that those of the US. I'd applaud those laws if they'd enforce them against those passing through on their way to the US. I agree that any sovereign nation has the right and duty to enact and enforce immigration laws that they believe best benefit that nation and the citizens thereof.
It's too damn bad that so many people are content to wallow in these double standards.
