Credit/Blame

I can hear the Trump haters now.  Blaming Trump for the recent decline in the stock markets.    I have absolutely no problem blaming Trump, as long as you are prepared to give him credit for the significant increases that have happened since he’s been elected.

And therein lies the difference. Conservatives praise or criticize the action based on its merits or results, while the left praises or criticizes an action based on the poltical party of the person doing the acting.

I’ve said for years that presidents get too much blame for bad stretches in the stock market and too much credit for the good.

I’m fine with that, as long as the standard is applied equally.

The stock market went up and they said he had nothing to do with it. It goes down and it's his fault. Yesterday a coworker got to work late because of a traffic problem (police activity that shut down the freeway for 18 hours) and claimed "Trump must be in town" because everyone knows that traffic tie-ups are his fault. When he went to honor the dead in the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting, they blamed Trump for it. Apparently, everything bad that happens is his fault and he can be credited with nothing good. The levels of hate for this president reaches way beyond reality.

It’s all about being consistent and intellectually honest in evaluating the performance of POTUS based on measurable reasonably objective standards. It’s not about evaluating this sort of things based on hatred of the current holder of the office.
