Thank goodness, the NYC jury did the right thing and acquitted Daniel Penny despite the legal maneuvering intended to get him convicted on a lesser charge despite contravening the jury instructions. There's no way I'd want to live in NYC, but this restores a little of my faith in the ordinary citizens.

Acquitted

Clearly we see his "father" (different last name...why is that?) demanding "justice" and insisting upon seeking it...which means another money grab on the order of all other families of thugs who sought to sue "for justice".
The most hilarious crap which has resulted from this is the racist morons from BLM daring to suggest they should engage in vigilante "justice" on behalf of black people. Well, if they're saying they'll act as Penny did if some white drugged up lunatic is threatening the lives of train passengers, I say, have at it. Somehow I'm thinking they have revenge in their minds....revenge for fictitious wrongs.
The double standard is incredibly strong in cases like this. It's likely that the "father" played a role in how Neeley turned out and now he's going to try to cash in/ruin someone's life because his kid was threatening people.
Neeley's father was probably solicited by some crooked lawyer looking for money.
Possibly, although I suspect that he was well aware of the possibilities for personal enrichment because of his son's death.
It would be interesting in a case like this for the defense to focus on demonstrating the (potential/theoretical) ways that the father contributed to the son ending up where he did. Probing into how present the father was during the son's childhood and what efforts the father had invested in dealing with the son's problems. Investigating their relationship in the years immediately prior to the incident, etc. I'm not sure how effective it would be, but I think I would be reluctant to give a bunch of money to a father who's (hypothetically) abandoned his son and failed to provide any attempt at getting him help.
Either way, the lawyer is also just looking for a big payday and lots of publicity.
