I'm not Roman Catholic for numerous reasons, but walking into lunch today and seeing the fish for Catholics menu I couldn't help but wonder why fish meat isn't considered meat. Does it transubstantiate somehow when it hits the cooking medium? Or is it just a deal to help Catholic owned fishmongers?

Something Fishy

I've looked over several links attempting to explain this, but none are compelling, except that which suggests that animals considered meats are considered more of a luxury item. They certainly taste better for most people, I'd wager, but this distinction of fish being apart from land and air animals runs throughout Western cultures, as fish on most menus are separate from beef, lamb and chicken/turkey. The distinction seems to go all the way back to the beginning of the Christian Church and I wondered about it every Friday when my non-Catholic buddies were enjoying steak and burgers on Fridays. In my house, it was always fish on Friday, and it just became more important during Lent. These days, in my house, Friday is pizza day. My wife wouldn't mind just eating fish, but we eat fish so often, I'm not keen on changing our little tradition. Plus, I'd have to change to white wine. I'll drink it and enjoy it, but I prefer reds.
