Peace in Our Time

Yesterday it was announced that Israel and Hamas had agreed to at least the first phase of the peace plan that Trump has been working on since he took office.   Clearly ending wars has been a priority of the Trump administration, and they've had some success in doing so.   I suspect that they'll eventually get something done in Ukraine as well.

Obviously, the single most important aspect of the Gaza plan is that Hamas release all of the hostages, including the bodies of the hostages that Hamas killed in captivity.   Until this happens, I'll remain skeptical.   The fact that Hamas seems to believe that there is an equivalence between the women and children they took hostage and have tortured and starved for two years, and Hamas terrorists held in Israeli prisons highlights a big difference.  This "We'll give back the hostages, as long as you give us back our terrorists." attitude is critical in my opinion.  They'll demand the release of the guilty, in exchange for the return of the innocent.

The only real questions in all of this is how long it will take for Hamas to rearm, before they start lobbing rockets again and how much of the billions Hamas will receive for aid will be diverted into arms and more fortifications/tunnels.

As it pertains to the Arab/Israeli conflict since 1948 we see one thing.   The Arabs have a well documented history of losing badly on the battle field, whining pitifully until some external entity imposes a "peace" deal, grudgingly accepting the "peace" deal, claiming victory, and starting to prepare for the next attack.

I sincerely hope this is different.  I sincerely hope that Hamas can be eradicated and removed from power in Gaza.  I sincerely hope that Gaza can replace Hamas with a more pragmatic, and liberal governing body.  I sincerely hope that this is the end of innocent civilians dying because Hamas is committed to the total destruction of Israel and the total removal of the Jews.

I'm also with Reagan, when he said "Trust, but verify.".   The onus is on Gaza and the broader Arab world to keep groups like Hamas in check, and to rebuild Gaza into an Islamic paradise.    But the inability of pragmatic Islam to control their radical cousins, doesn't give me hope that this time will be any different.

It won't be. I see nothing which suggests it could be. It's the same old, same old. Unfortunately, it seems the only legitimate option is to warn our citizens that their capture by assholes cannot be used against proper action to eradicate the asshole.

I recall a story of a wealthy dude whose son was kidnapped to extort money from the rich man. The father did not capitulate because it would not stop further actions against his family and those like his. I may have the details wrong...it might have been a diplomat whose son was kidnapped by a terrorist-type group. In any case, the lesson is sadly true. Thus, my "peace plan" would be as follows:

Release all hostages, live or dead, or we will not stop killing you and your people. I absolutely do not care about the muslim people more than I care for my own and if my own are to be threatened or worse, it will come at a most lethal cost to those to so dared. This would be the pattern from then on: Harm mine, and you will pay. The actual perpetrators will be hunted down and killed.

This is all the muslims seem to understand. It's all they've ever demonstrated understanding. There's nothing which will stop them from seeking to harm or subjugate non-muslims and the world would not be worse off if islam was eradicated, either by force or attrition. I sadly can't see any better way forward.

I have my doubts that it will last, also. Simply based on the history of the conflict, it makes sense to doubt.

I agree that the single biggest factor in this plan must be the immediate release of the hostages. Upon that, the rest hinges.

Hamas and the rest of the terrorist groups seem to serve a useful function for Iran and other power brokers in the Middle East so I would expect to see them continue in that role in the future to some degree. I believe that Israel has set a precedent regarding responses to future attacks, which might help them a bit going forward.

I fully expect to see the "protesters" across the globe celebrating the end to the "genocide" and peace in Gaza very soon, because that is how normal people would behave. When your goal is achieved, you celebrate. Dan will either remain silent, as giving Trump credit for anything positive would go against every fiber of his being, or somehow pretend that the return of the hostages and the elimination of Hamas is just too horrible to accept.

I guess we'll see.

"I absolutely do not care about the muslim people.."

Speaking Truth to Atrocity.

What an interesting response. We have a deal in place to get the hostages released and stop the conflict, and this is what you can muster up. All you can do is distort what Art actually said.

Caring more for those in your community/society/family than those not in those groups is pretty much the default position of humanity, and doesn't suggest a lack of care so much as a preference.

What a sad state of affairs when you're reduced to lying, instead of celebrating potential peace.

FYI, I'll guarantee that Muslims care more for other Muslims than for a Kafir like you.

Dan did exactly what the LEFT did with Charlie Kirk--take a short phrase out of context and then condemn the man for what he said! It's how they claimed Kirk was racist, "transphobe," and every other "phobe" when he was nothing of the kind.

Are you surprised that Dan chose to do that? That he intentionally took something out of context, and used it as a straw man in order to attack Art? This is how he interprets scripture as well. He takes a snippet out of context, filters it through his preconceptions, then acts as if that snippet is definitive.
