Christopher Hitchens wasn't particularly kind to Christianity over his lifetime, but he was significantly more educated and intelligent than Dan. Let's compare Hitchen's thoughts on Islam to Dan's.

Where he was certainly most dismayed by islam than by any other religion he ridiculed, I believe it was 9/11 which really served to ramp up his need to warn the world to resist it at all costs. It should never have taken that for us, as all we needed to do was learn from history and current events (of the time) around the world. It was only a matter of time before they struck us again and now, alas, the stupid have gone back to sleep.
Hitchens was one of the few atheists that wasn't afraid to go after religions other than Christianity. Most public atheists realize that they stand very little chance of being murdered by a Christian for their atheism, and a much greater chance of being murdered by a Muslim for their atheism. So they take the less dangerous course and go after the religion that is least likely to harm them.
I'll try to look it up at some point, but I believe that Hitchens did acknowledge the reality that societies that came from Christian foundations had served civilization much better then Muslim societies.
