This is so spot on.
On a somewhat related note, an acquaintance learned from the pediatrician that cell phones are bad for teenagers. That what kids use cell phones for drives increased rates of depression and anxiety for starters. This genius then wonders if restricting their daughter's phone use will help her anxiety/depression meds work better.
The more I think about it, smart phones, game consoles, wifi and COVID are going to end up being demonstrated to have had an incredibly negative effect on at least one generation of children, maybe two.

Next generation?? How about the current one already mostly mush-for-brains?
That's a fair point. I've had this conversation recently with a couple of people. I am convinced that the advent of smart phones, wifi, social media, and COVID, are going to leave an indelible scar on a generation of younger people that will negatively affect US society for years. At some point people will be appalled at what parents allowed their kids to have access to in the 2000's.
Though I always have mine with me, and use it for a lot of things (including BS when I have a few moments to waste but not feeling motivated to do anything important), I continue to regard the smart phone as possibly the most evil invention ever despite the intention of it being for our benefit.
I have a flip phone. I figure I have a computer and a camera and a phone, and the three do not mix!
like many things the phone itself (and the necessary internet connection) is pretty much neutral. Like money it can be used for good things or bad things. That so much of what it is used for is bad, isn't the fault of the phone.
I don't disagree that the impact of the smart phone (along with mobile internet access, social media, and all the rest) will probably have a significant negative impact on society that will become more and more evident.
Like so many things that are huge leaps forward, this is one more that's been misused. The biggest misuse is unsupervised children with smartphones and internet access.
It's a chicken/egg thing to some degree. Porn was always around, but until the internet connected smart phone it took some effort and the chance of being shamed to access. Prostitution the same, now OF allows girls to prostitute themselves without leaving home and hookup apps make it easy for those who want in person meaningless sex. The smart phone and all that goes with it, have made it easier to indulge our baser desires.
I couldn't do business without one, otherwise I would probably do something similar.
