TBH I'm ambivalent about the plane. I agree, in principle, that the VC-25 should be the best possible aircraft available and US built. On the one hand, given the recent spate of Boeing QC issues, it might be argued that another 747 based VC-25 is a questionable choice. On the other hand, Boeing is a US company with the contract to build the plane and it's beneficial to both Boeing and the US to buy the new plane.
If Biden/P-BO/Harris had made this deal, I can't imagine thinking that it was a good deal or look. So I'm having a hard time jumping on the bandwagon of this being some sort of big win for anyone but Qatar. What I have found is that the cost to do the upgrades necessary for the plane to temporarily serve as a VC-25 will be near a billion dollars. One the one hand, given a government that pisses away trillions on nonsense and with the massive public debt, this seems an expense that could be forgone as we wait for Boeing to finish the new VC-25s. On the other hand, given a government that pisses away billions and seems less than interested in reducing the debt significantly (Although Trump is actively trying to refinance government debt at lower rates, which is valuable, but not enough), who the hell cares about a random billion.
