It's honestly pretty brave to publish something like this in a paper like the NYT.

So you're going to believe the NYT instead of the "EXPERTS!!!!!"?
Given that the NYT has likely been kissing the "EXPERTS" ass for years, I think it's quite the significant moment to see them diverge from the leftist, orthodox, narrative.
