We're Not A Democracy (Updated)

 https://www.nytimes.com/2025/08/14/opinion/trump-democracy-test-left.html

"Abolish the Senate. End the Electoral College. Pack the Court.

Why the left can’t win without a new Constitution."

When the NYT acknowledges that the left needs "a new Constitution" to win, it seems like a really bad sign for the left.

As I read through this interview, and based on the headline, what is coming through to me is that there is a faction of the ASPL that  want to end our representative republic and move toward a pure democracy.

I'm not going to copy/paste a lot of quotes, but this kind of sums up what I've read so far.

" But I think, it’s fair to say that a system is not really democratic, as much as it might purport to be one."

This this author fails to understand that our system does not "purport" to be a democracy, and was established that way intentionally, seriously undermines his credibility.

He is right about one thing regarding the 2024 election.   The DFL ran on stupid crap.  It focused on exaggerating the "race" problem, abortion and "trans"  crap for the most part  even though the majority of the US does not agree with their radical stance.  They ignored and lied about things like job growth, and inflation in order to run on divisive garbage.

I think that this guy is correct in saying that the left will have to significantly rewrite the Constitution and pack the courts in order to accomplish their goals.  I can only hope that this message doesn't gain too much traction.  Although I suspect that they will be less than honest about their goals until it's too late.   This is simply the ultimate outworking of giving the masses the ability to vote themselves largess from the public treasury foolishly believing that they can "tax the rich" enough to pay for their fantasies.    IF this happens, God help us all.

I think these fools conflate "democratic"...as in how we operate...with "democracy"...which is not our form of government. That is, can we have democracy without being a democracy>? I think the answer is yes and is true of our nation. But more to the point, these people use these terms either purposefully or out of ignorance.

I think that the use of the term democracy to describe our government, even though it's kind of shorthand, is problematic. It obviously confuses plenty of people who think that we actually have a democracy, rather than a representative republic. Further, they don't understand that our republic isn't based on individual votes. but on the collective vote of each state. That the states are the primary unit, not individuals.

This use of democracy, allows people misuse the term as a way to mislead the ignorant or stupid. In this case it seems like it's one of the elites trying to bullshit people.

So purposely from those who definitely know better, and ignorantly out of those who bought in to their narrative.

Yeah, pretty much that. They take the shorthand reference to our Constitutional/Representative Republic as a democracy, and intentionally twist that to advocating for an actual democracy. Which would absolutely be the worst form of government ever.
